Author Hazakura

General meaning

To tell my heart or to tell the others to keep in mind action A, we use ようにする or ようにしている.

Aようにする

= I will keep in mind to do A

A ようにしてください

= Remember to do A please

For example

1/ I will keep in mind to use water carefully.

= Use water carefully ようにする

To tell my heart what to do let’s end B clause with ~ する or ~ した 。.

2/ Hi dear, please don’t forget my face!

= Don’t forget me ようにしてください

To tell the others, let’s end B clause with ください。

What is the difference of ~ ようにする ・ ~ ようにしている?

Both grammar points refer to the meaning Keep in mind to do A, but the nuance is different.

  • When we tell our heart to keep in mind doing A, we use ようにする

A ようにする = Keep in mind to do A

  • When we tell our hearts to keep in mind doing A regularly, we use ようにしている.

A ようにしている = Remember to do A regularly

In short, the difference factor is in the “regularity” of doing A.

For example

私はなるべく自分で料理を作って食べるようにしている。

= Watashi wa narubeku jibun de ryōri o tsukutte taberu yō ni shite iru.

= I keep in mind to regularly cook by myself.

The grammar point used here is ようにしている, the translation is with the word regularly

電気は大切にするようにします。

= Denki wa taisetsu ni suru yō ni shimasu.

= I keep in mind to use electricity carefully.

The grammar point used is ようにします, thus the translation has no word “regularly”.

In short,

  • When keeping in mind of doing action A once, we use ようにする.
  • When keeping in mind of doing action A regularly, we use ようにしている.
