によって or ために or ことから or おかげで or せいで ? How to solve grammar test?

Author Hazakura

All of them means Since A then B But not all of them can be interchangeable in all cases. In JLPT tests, at a time, at a space, there is only 1 answer.

How to solve the test with Since A then B?

Rule 1 : Look at the B clause

If B ends in induction form like てください、ましょう・ません or volitional verbs (つもり), don’t hesitate to exclude:

ために によって ことから おかげで せいで

This case, only kara から is correct.

Why?

The taboo of ために、によって、ことから、おかげで、せいで is no てください, no ましょう・ませんか, no たい・つもり at B clause.

We wouldn’t say

この村には医者がいないために、隣の町に行ってください。 = Since there is no doctor in this village, let’s go to the village next door.

B ends with 行ってください which makes it wrong with ために.

We also don’t have

1/ うちの工場は材料不足によって、クローズしたい。x = Since my factory does not have enough material, I want to close it . X

No たい at B clause for によって.

2/ 顔がよく似ていることから、兄弟になってください。 = Since our faces look similar, let’s be brothers.

It’s a wrong combination, ことから and ください

3/ 最近忙しかったせいで、僕の家にこないでください. X = Since I have been too busy recently, please do not come to my home.

4/ 先生のおかげで、大学に入学したい X = Because of sensei, I want to go to university.

Rule 2: Look at A clause

If B clause does not violate rule 1 which means B does not end in ください、ましょう・ませんか, look at A clause

If A is not noun (but A is verb, adjective), exclude によって.

Why? によってonly goes with noun.

We don’t have この村に医者がいないによって、町に行ってください。

Because A is verb いない. によってonly accepts A as a noun.

This is correct

うちの工場では材料不足によって、畳の生産はもうできなかった。 = Since the factory is lacking of material, we could not produce tatami.

Rule 3: The nuance

When rule 1 and rule 3 are not violated, look at the nuance to decide which grammar is correct.

(1) If the nuance focuses on the appreciation, and B is the good result : choose おかげで

A おかげで B = Thanks to A, B

風邪をひいたおかげで一日ねてるはめになった。 = Thanks to getting flue, I ended up sleeping all day.

(2) If the nuance of B focuses on blaming, and B is the bad result : choose せいで

A せいで B = Due to A, B

渋滞のせいで遅刻した。

= Due to a traffic jam, I was late.

(3) If the nuance focuses on a judgement, an understanding of the speaker : choose ことから

A ことから B = From A, I know B

顔がよく似ていることから、二人は親子だとすぐわかった。

= From the similarity of faces, i Knew that the two people are father and son.

(4) If the nuance is katai, only focuses on the relationship of cause and effect: choose ために

出張のために、明日のかいぎは毛っっ席させていただきます。 = Because of a business trip, I would like to be absent from the meeting tomorrow.
